Introduction of University of Southampton
The University of Southampton is a research university located in Southampton, England. The university's origins date back to the founding of the Hartley Institution in 1862. In 1902, the Institution developed into the Hartley University College, awarding degrees from the University of London. On 29 April 1952, the institution was granted full university status, allowing it to award its own degrees. Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities in Britain. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework the university was ranked 18th in the United Kingdom for average quality of research submitted, 11th for research power and 8th for research intensity.
The university has seven teaching campuses. The main campus is located in the Highfield area of Southampton and is supplemented by four other campuses within the city: Avenue Campus housing the Faculty of Humanities, the National Oceanography Centre housing courses in Ocean and Earth Sciences, Southampton General Hospital offering courses in Medicine and Health Sciences, and Boldrewood Campus an engineering and maritime technology campus housing also the university's strategic ally Lloyd's Register. In addition, the university operates a School of Art based in nearby Winchester and an international branch in Malaysia offering courses in Engineering. Each campus is equipped with its own library facilities.
The University of Southampton currently has 17,535 undergraduate and 7,650 postgraduate students, making it the largest university by higher education students in the South East region. The University of Southampton Students' Union, provides support, representation and social activities for the students ranging from involvement in the Union's four media outlets to any of the 200 affiliated societies and 80 sports. The university owns and operates a sports ground at nearby Wide Lane for use by students and also operates a sports centre on the main campus.

南安普顿大学于2013年5月9日与牛津大学，剑桥大学，伦敦帝国学院和伦敦大学学院共同发起并创立了科学与工程南联盟（Science and Engineering South Consortium）, 为凝聚学识见解和资源所建构之五校集团，为英国最顶尖的科学联盟，亦是世界最领先的研究中心之一。
南安普顿大学是英国大学专业评级中唯一一所每个理工部门都收到五星研究评级的大学，被公认为世界顶尖理工大学之一。此外，统计及运筹等专业在2016年QS世界排名，居世界前50名。大学拥有海洋研究机构—英国国家海洋研究中心（NOCS），光电子研究中心（ORC），癌症免疫学中心（CCI，在建）等其它研究中心。大学于1996年收并英国著名艺术院校—温彻斯特艺术学院。著名校友有“互联网之父”蒂姆·伯纳斯·李（Tim Berners-Lee）现任其计算机科学学院教授；诺贝尔经济学奖得主克里斯托弗·皮萨里德斯；现任伦敦大学学院（UCL）校长（President & Provost）迈克尔·阿瑟（Michael Arthur）。
Prof Yeping Xiong
Dr. Yeping Xiong is Associate Professor within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.
Yeping Xiong is currently an Associate Professor in the Fluid Structure Interactions Research Group within the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment of the university and Director for Faculty Joint Programme with China. Previously she was Director of Maritime MSc Programme for 6 years. Prior to join the University of Southampton in 2001, she was Full Professor since 1996 in the Institute of Engineering Mechanics, Shandong University, China. She has been an elected member of EPSRC Peer Review College since 2003, International Committee Member of ISSC (International Ship & Offshore Structures Congress) since 2009, member of ASME, member of International Institution of Acoustics & Vibration, and invited reviewer for many international journals. She has published over 160 papers in refereed Journals and Conference Proceedings.
Her research interests cover structural dynamics, active/passive/hybrid vibration control, vibratory power flow theory and analysis approaches, linear/nonlinear vibrations, structure-control interactions, vehicle-bridge interactions, fluid-structure interactions, vibration energy harvesting, smart material and structures, topology optimizations, dynamic modelling and numerical simulations. These interests are reflected in her research undertaken such as EU FP7 ADAM4EVE, EPSRC, EU-MARSTRUCT, KTN SMART.idea award, LRET UTC, IHI Japan collaborative project, RAE Major Award etc. addressing vibration problems in linear and nonlinear dynamic coupling systems; vibration energy transmission, dissipation, absorption and control mechanism using her developed power flow theory and analysis approaches; ride comfort of high-speed craft considering human factor, hybrid vibration isolation and control, sloshing behaviour and transient responses of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas ) carriers considering fluid-structure interactions, smart Magnetorheological Elastomer (MRE) materials, and smart structures.
